Creating the Foundation for Upper Jaw Implants
Dental implants in the upper back jaw can be challenging because the maxillary sinuses sit directly above the molars and premolars. After tooth loss, bone naturally shrinks while the sinus floor gradually expands downward, often leaving too little bone to securely support an implant.
A sinus lift, or sinus augmentation, addresses this by gently raising the sinus membrane and placing bone graft material beneath it. As the graft heals, it develops into strong, healthy bone that provides the height needed for successful implant placement. At Falcon Dental Group, this procedure is performed by Dr. Khashayar Azimi, our certified implantologist and periodontist, whose advanced surgical training supports precise treatment. Once healing is complete and the implants are placed, Dr. Horacio Falcon restores the final replacement teeth to complete each patient's smile.
Did you know…
Two Approaches to Sinus Augmentation
- Lateral Window Sinus Lift: The lateral window approach is used when significant bone loss has occurred in the upper jaw. A small opening is created in the side of the jaw to lift the sinus membrane gently and place bone graft material, allowing enough bone to develop before implants are placed.
- Transcrestal (Internal) Sinus Lift: When sufficient bone remains, a transcrestal sinus lift may be performed through the implant site itself, often during the same appointment as implant placement. This less invasive technique can shorten treatment time and recovery, although it is only suitable for patients with adequate existing bone.
What to Expect During and After a Sinus Lift
- Pre-Surgical Evaluation: Your treatment begins with a comprehensive examination and 3D CBCT imaging. Dr. Azimi evaluates your sinus anatomy, available bone, and overall oral health to determine the most appropriate sinus lift technique and identify any conditions that should be addressed before surgery.
- The Procedure: A sinus lift is typically performed under local anesthesia, with sedation available for added comfort. Depending on your needs, Dr. Azimi either accesses the sinus through a small opening in the side of the jaw or through the implant site itself before placing the bone graft material.
- Recovery and Healing: Mild swelling, bruising, and temporary nasal congestion are common during the first few days after surgery. Patients receive detailed aftercare instructions, including avoiding activities that increase sinus pressure, to help protect the graft and promote proper healing.
- Bone Maturation and Implant Placement: The graft gradually develops into healthy bone over the following months, with healing time varying based on the extent of the procedure. Once imaging confirms the graft is fully integrated, dental implants can be placed and Dr. Falcon completes the final restorative phase of treatment.
