Effective Gum Disease Treatment That Starts With Conservation
When periodontal disease is diagnosed, the first goal is always to bring the infection under control using the most conservative approach that will be clinically effective. For the majority of patients presenting with mild to moderate periodontitis, non-surgical periodontal therapy achieves exactly that. It removes the bacterial deposits driving the disease, disrupts the conditions that allow those deposits to reform, and establishes a maintenance schedule that keeps the disease from progressing further.
At Falcon Dental Group, non-surgical periodontal therapy is provided by Dr. Khashayar Azimi, a board-certified periodontist and dental implant specialist. Patients throughout Harper Woods and Grosse Pointe benefit from specialist-level periodontal evaluation and treatment without the need for an outside referral

When Non-Surgical Treatment Is the Right Starting Point
Non-surgical periodontal therapy is appropriate for patients at multiple stages of gum disease, not only those with mild presentations. It is the standard first line of treatment for mild and moderate periodontitis and is also used to control and stabilize more advanced disease before surgical intervention is considered. Often it is the only treatment a patient will ever need.
Patients who may benefit from non-surgical periodontal therapy include those who have been diagnosed with periodontitis for the first time, those who have noticed signs of gum disease such as bleeding, recession, or persistent bad breath, and those who have been away from dental care for an extended period and present with significant buildup below the gumline.
Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapies We Offer
- Scaling and Root Planing: Often called a deep cleaning, scaling and root planing removes plaque, tartar, and bacteria from below the gumline and smooths the tooth roots to encourage healthy gum reattachment. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia for comfort and is typically completed over multiple visits, followed by a healing period and re-evaluation.
- Periodontal Maintenance: Patients treated for periodontal disease require ongoing maintenance to help prevent recurrence. Unlike routine dental cleanings, periodontal maintenance appointments are scheduled every three to four months and include pocket measurements, gum health evaluations, and thorough removal of bacterial deposits to keep the disease under control.
- Adjunctive Periodontal Therapies: When needed, Dr. Azimi may recommend additional therapies to support healing and improve treatment outcomes. Depending on your condition, this may include locally delivered antibiotics, antimicrobial rinses, or systemic antibiotics to reduce persistent bacterial infection and enhance the effectiveness of non-surgical periodontal care.
