What Is Periodontal Disease?
Periodontal disease is a progressive bacterial infection that damages the structures supporting your teeth, including the gums, periodontal ligament, and jawbone. It begins when plaque, a sticky film of bacteria, is not effectively removed through brushing and flossing. Over time, plaque hardens into calculus (tartar), creating a reservoir of bacteria below the gumline that cannot be removed with a toothbrush.
The bacteria trigger inflammation in the gum tissue. In its earliest stage, known as gingivitis, the gums become red, swollen, and prone to bleeding, but the bone and connective tissues remain unaffected. Gingivitis is reversible with professional treatment and good oral hygiene. Without treatment, the infection progresses into periodontitis, where deep periodontal pockets form and the body's inflammatory response begins to destroy the bone and connective tissue supporting the teeth. This damage is permanent and requires ongoing periodontal care.

Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapy
For patients presenting with mild to moderate periodontitis, non-surgical therapy is the first line of treatment and is often sufficient to bring the disease under control without surgical intervention. Non-surgical therapy at Falcon Dental Group includes scaling and root planing, periodontal maintenance, and adjunctive therapies where clinically indicated.
Periodontal Surgery
When non-surgical therapy does not achieve adequate disease control, or when the stage of disease at presentation requires a level of access that instrumentation alone cannot provide, surgical treatment is indicated. Surgical services include, bone grafting for periodontal defects, gum grafting, and crown lengthening, each selected and performed based on the clinical needs of the individual case.
Stages of Periodontal Disease
- Gingivitis: The earliest and only reversible stage. Gums are inflamed and bleed easily. The bone and periodontal ligament are not yet affected. Professional cleaning combined with improved home care can fully resolve gingivitis.
- Mild Periodontitis: Bacterial infection has begun to penetrate below the gumline. Early bone loss is present and periodontal pockets of four to five millimeters are typically detected on clinical examination.
- Moderate Periodontitis: Bone loss has progressed, pockets deepen to six millimeters or more, and the teeth may begin to show signs of mobility. Gum recession may become visible and treatment at this stage is more involved.
- Severe Periodontitis: Significant bone loss has occurred, pockets are deep, and teeth may be severely mobile or at risk of loss. Surgical intervention is often necessary to access and clean the deep infection and, where possible, regenerate lost bone.
