Replace One Missing Tooth With a Permanent Solution

When an Extraction Is the Beginning, Not the End

For many patients, a tooth extraction feels like a loss. For patients already thinking about what comes next, it is better understood as the starting point of a process that leads to a permanent, natural-looking replacement. How an extraction is performed, what is done at the time of removal, and how quickly the implant process begins all have a direct bearing on how successful the implant treatment that follows will be.

At Falcon Dental Group, every extraction performed as part of implant treatment is planned with the next phase in mind. Care is taken to preserve as much bone and healthy tissue as possible, evaluate the site for immediate implant placement when appropriate, and create a smooth transition from extraction to tooth replacement with minimal disruption.

Did you know…

that the way a tooth is extracted can affect the bone that remains at the site afterward? Atraumatic extraction techniques prioritize preserving the surrounding bone walls and gum tissue during removal. When extractions are performed with implant planning in mind, patients are more likely to retain the bone volume needed for a straightforward implant procedure and less likely to require additional bone grafting before placement can proceed.

Steps to Follow at Extraction Appointment to Protect Your Implant Site

The extraction appointment itself presents several opportunities to protect the bone and set the implant process in motion. Dr. Azimi will discuss which of the following applies to your case during your consultation.
  • Atraumatic Extraction: Atraumatic extraction uses specialized techniques to remove a tooth while preserving as much surrounding bone and soft tissue as possible. Protecting the extraction site creates a stronger foundation for immediate implant placement or future bone grafting and implant treatment.
  • Socket Preservation: When an implant cannot be placed immediately, socket preservation helps maintain the bone after tooth removal. Bone graft material is placed into the socket to reduce bone loss and preserve the ridge for future implant placement.
  • Immediate Implant Placement: If the extraction site is healthy and has enough supporting bone, a dental implant may be placed during the same appointment as the extraction. This approach can reduce treatment time and the number of surgical procedures required.
  • Immediate Provisionalization: In suitable cases, a temporary crown can be attached to the implant on the day of surgery. This allows patients to leave with a functional, natural-looking tooth while the implant heals and integrates with the jawbone.

When a Staged Approach Is the Right Choice

Immediate implant placement is not appropriate for every situation. A staged approach, extracting the tooth, allowing the site to heal with socket preservation in place, and placing the implant several months later, is often the most predictable path. Staged placement is typically recommended when the extraction site shows signs of active infection, when significant bone loss has already occurred around the failing tooth, or when additional bone grafting is needed before an implant can be placed. Dr. Azimi will determine the appropriate sequencing based on the site condition and the overall treatment plan developed with Dr. Falcon.

Start the Conversation Before the Extraction Happens

The best time to discuss implant planning is before the tooth comes out, not after. If you have a tooth that is failing, infected, or has been recommended for extraction, scheduling a consultation at Falcon Dental Group gives Dr. Azimi and Dr. Falcon the opportunity to evaluate your case, discuss what can be done at the time of extraction to protect your implant options, and map out a clear path from removal to restoration. Our office serves patients throughout Harper Woods, Grosse Pointe, and the surrounding communities.
